Events & Registration

Registration for all 2012/2013 school year is just around the corner!  Call for an appointment to tour the school.  Open Registration is on February 27th!

Call now to set an appointment to tour our Preschool and/or our Primary school

For families interested in attending Shady Oak for the first time, please contact Bridget Hilbe, Assistant Director, or Joyce Trigger, Director, at 281-341-5001 to make an appointment to visit the school. Formal visits to our Pre-School are conducted Monday through Friday in the mornings. Visits take approximately one hour. During these visits you will be given the opportunity to visit both our Primary and Preschool campuses, hear about our philosophy on learning, ask questions and receive valuable information on the registration and enrollment process. Visiting the school is a prerequisite to enrolling in our pre-school and primary school programs. We still have openings in many of our Preschool and Primary School Classes. Primary school registration has additional requirements. If you are interested in enrolling your child in our Primary Program (kindergarten through 4th grade) please contact Bridget or Joyce directly for information on enrollment requirements. Through our 25 years of experience, we have found that the families that take the time to learn about their child's school ahead of time, have better success transitioning into our program. We hope that you will take the time to visit and consider our unique learning environment that inspires all children to think “outside the box”.

There are immediate openings in both the Preschool and Primary school for students seeking the unique learning environment that is Shady Oak.  Please call to inquire about our availability in the 2011-12 school year.

Multi-Cultural Center at Shady Oak:

“We find these joys to be self-evident: that all children are created whole, endowed with innate intelligence, with dignity and wonder, worthy of respect. The embodiment of life, liberty and happiness, children are original blessings, here to learn their own song. Every girl and boy is entitled to love, to dream, and belong to a loving “village”. And to pursue a life of purpose.” - Raffi, “A Covenant of Honoring Children”

Please note our mission statement:

The mission of the Shady Oak Christian School’s multi-cultural program is to promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation for the value of diversity by emphasizing self-awareness and positive social identities. We promote an environment that encourages and celebrates caring, respectful relationships among all who we encounter.

Thank you for being a part of the Shady Oak community! We are looking forward to another “wonder-filled” year! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact me, Cathy Wesley at:

Heart Healthy Work-Out Days

 The American Heart Association has designated February as HEART month.  In conjunction with this, on Wednesday, February 22  and Thursday, February 23, all preschool classes will be joining  with MDO at First Baptist Church for “Heart Healthy Work Out Days”.  This joint project will be a great chance to be with children in this neighboring program.  We will be exercising and singing and checking our heart rates in the gym at First Baptist Church from 10:30 - 11:00 a.m.  Let us know if you want to join us!

 Need Help Parenting?

Everybody needs help with the difficult, yet joyful, task of parenting.  This semester we will study a book called, Making Children Mind without Losing Yours, by Kevin Leman.  It is available at amazon.com , Half Price Books and other locations. This book will help us look together at:

* How children learn;

* How to be the authority in your home without being authoritarian;

* Why reward and punishment no longer work;

* Why—and how—reality discipline does work.

Our meeting time is Thursdays, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Childcare will be provided by reservation only.  The cost of childcare is $4.00 per child, with a maximum of $10 per family.  There will be a limited number of places for childcare, so reserve your space(s) right away by contacting Joyce at joycetrigger@att.net or 281.787.9421.  The meetings and childcare will take place in the Primary Building. Meeting dates are January 12, January 26, February 9, February 23, March 8, and March 22.

Craft Work Days – in February

This month we will have Craft work days at the Preschool Building and at the Primary Building.  We will be working on crafts that will be for sale at or before our Spring Thing on April 14.  Join in the fun for great company and conversation, as well as developing new skills and getting new craft ideas.  Stevie Ballow will be leading the Preschool moms and Tracy Airhart will be leading the Primary moms.  There is something to do for every skill level, so come help us out!

See schedule below:

 * Friday, February 17, 8:30 — Preschool-decorated clip boards — Primary - fabric art.

 * Tuesday, February 21, 8:30 — same as the 17th.

* Wednesday, February 29, same as previous craft days.

Supplies needed: both groups need to bring good quality scissors.

 Shady Oak Art Blog

Dear Parents,

I am excited to announce that Shady Oak now has its very own Art Blog. It is called ‘Acorns to Oaks’ and can be accessed via the following link, http://acorntooakart.com/ I will be sharing images of art work created by students, providing information about art concepts and skills taught and offering useful links for students to further explore artists we have discussed in class. I am really excited about this new venture and hope you will enjoy the content. Please note that I will only be posting pictures of the children’s art work and not photographs of the children. Their first names and last initial will be displayed only. Presently, I have only uploaded images of work completed by students in Pre-K and  Bridge through 4th grade. I welcome your comments, ideas, and pictures and would love for you to follow the blog via email.
